Domo Sandbox: How to create a dashboard (AKA page) repo without creating beast mode copies?

I'd love to start using Domo Sandbox as a dev environment to edit dashboards and then promote when ready. We don't want users to view changes that are in progress! However, I've only gotten dashboard (AKA page) repos to work when they copy literally EVERYTHING on the page — cards and beast modes. My group only wants to make aesthetic changes and add/remove new cards to dashboards. Creating new versions of beast modes adds an incredible amount of bloat since the development versions are visible everywhere in Domo datasets, not just from the dev dashboard.

My questions are:

  1. Is there a way to create a development dashboard/page without duplicating cards and beast modes?
  2. Is there a smart way to remove the duplicate cards and beast modes? I renamed all my development objects to end with "_DEV" so the best way I've figured out is to search for them in the beast mode manager and delete anything with that naming convention.

TIA

This is how I set up the rename settings in the LINK repo. Previously I'd tried to ignore cards and beast modes, but it still wanted to make copies of both and then gave me an error due to duplicate beast mode names. I could toggle the repo to ignore errors, but I figure that would still try to duplicate beast modes and make it harder to remove the unused versions. Unless something in Domo would simply cause it to avoid creating duplicates, then that would work out. However, I can't find enough Sandbox documentation on pages to confirm this.

Update: it looks like virtual datasets could be the solution. Would love more detail if anyone has experience here!
