Graph by Hour Unavailable on Date Selector

Hello,
I have a bar chart where the X Axis is a datetime beast mode created using the str_to_date() function and I am charting by hour. In design of the card I can set any date range and the card graphs by hour. When viewing the card if I change the date range the card defaults to a Graph By of Day and greys out Hour. Why am I losing the graph by hour functionality?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Chris, I don't know the UI is behaving the way it is.
As a work around could you just create beast mode to give you hours : minutes ...

Thank you for the idea! The date and time is already a beast mode but I created another beast mode as a string for the axis and it allows the date selector to be used.
