Bar Chart Selection Not Filtering Data Card

Hoping someone can help me on this one.

I've got a dashboard (below) where I have two charts, one that looks at data across all time, then one to its right that focuses on last 4 weeks.

Then I have a detail table below to show results.

When the right weekly chart has results that display at least 2 bars, either bar becomes selectable such that I can have the detail table refresh with that weeks data.

When the right weekly chart only has results for 1 bar (one of the last 4 weeks), then that bar is not selectable to refresh the detail table.

Any idea why that is working that way? Very frustrating.

Thank you!

  • A minor update to the above. When I select the bar title on the x axis it is not selectable for refresh. Only the subsegments of the bar can be selected. This only happens when a single bar is being displayed.

  • Still need help on this one.

Hello Afiweger, My name is Landon and I am with Domo Support. I took a look at this question, and tried my best to re-create the cards and dashboards you had presented to observe the behaviors you have described, determine what is going on, and offer you an explanation and solution.

When multiple cards are on a dashboard, clicking into a subset of data on any card will drill down to that level of data, while simultaneously applying a filter at the dashboard level.

Exactly as you described, when there are multiple columns in the 'by Week' chart to the right, You are able to click on either a column value OR a date value along the x-axis. Since there is more data outside what you are opting to drill into, the card allows the drilldown and your filter is applied at the dashboard level.

Clicking into the column itself drills into the specified event type in the specified week.

Clicking a value on the x-axis drills into the specific week.

However, when there is just a single column in the 'by Week' chart to the right, we are only able to click on a column value to have a filter applied at the dashboard level to apply to the other charts. This is because only the 'event type' has more data outside of what you are choosing to drill into. If there is only 1 week of data being displayed, clicking that week along the x-axis does not have anything to drill into, so no filter is applied.

You can drill into an event type, because there are other event types that specific week.

Now that we understand what is happening, I would like to offer a solution for you by setting up a filter view to accomplish what clicking a week along the x-axis does when multiple weeks of data are present.
    1. Clicking on the column itself applies two filters, an 'Event type' filter AND a 'Date (by week)' filter.
    2. You can mouse over the 'Event type' filter and hit the dropdown arrow, followed by the red trash can icon to remove the 'Event type' filter.

    3. Hover over the current filtered week (in blue) and hit the x.

    4. This leaves you with an empty 'Date (by week)' filter.

    5. Now, at the top right side of the page choose to 'Save filters' and name your filter however you like.
    6. You can select this filter for future use with the 'filter views' dropdown menu, and set the week to any week you would like with a quick search.

    7. The data on your other cards will now be filtered down to your chosen week.

    8. If you would like to share this filter view with all other viewers of this dashboard, then choose the three-dot menu in the 'Filter views' dropdown. Here you can choose to share the filter, or even set it as a default.

Hopefully this has been helpful information. If you would like to read more about all you can do with Filter Views, please take a look at this knowledge base article: https://domo-support.domo.com/s/article/360042923914?language=en_US
