๐ Thanks @jm_gomez for the idea ๐
This weekโs tip comes with something new, Chart of the Month ๐
From now on, every first week of the month weโll highlight a Domo chart type thatโs worth discovering (or revisiting). These charts can help you tell better data stories, especially when used in the right scenario.
Weโre kicking it off with one thatโs perfect for showing how things move or break down across steps, the Sankey chart.
When you need to show how things flow from one stage to another, like users through a funnel, costs across departments, or products through a supply chain, the Sankey chart is your best friend. It visualises the distribution and volume between categories, making it easy to spot where things split, merge or drop off.
๐ What you need:
- A dataset with at least two columns for categories, like "Source" and "Target"
- A numeric value to represent volume or flow, such as number of users, cost, or units
๐ฏ Perfect for:
- Marketing funnel flows, for example Campaign, Channel, Conversion
- Cost allocation, such as Department, Activity, Outcome
- Operational processes, like Input, Stage, Output
๐ Tips:
- Keep it simple, 2 to 3 levels is often enough
- Use clear, consistent labels to avoid confusion
- Great for storytelling and uncovering inefficiencies or drop-offs
The Sankey chart is available in the chart picker, under "Other".
Try building one using an existing dataset to uncover hidden patterns or explain a complex flow more clearly.
