Stream API Security

I'm looking to utilize the Stream API to bypass workbench for our data uploads however the data I'm uploading is very sensitive (ePHI).  Looking at the API documentation it is making requests over HTTP, how would I ensure the data is sent over HTTPS and/or ensuring encryption in transit?
