YTD distinct customers

I want to see the number of distinct customers this year compared to the number of distinct customer to this date last year (or in previous years). I've got this Beast Mode calculation, but it doesn't produce any data:

 

CASE when DAYOFYEAR(`Date`) < DAYOFYEAR(CURRENT_DATE()) then COUNT(DISTINCT `Customer Number`) else 0 end

(I'm using a filter on the Date to just see last year and this year.)

If your Customer Number field is a string, you may need to change the Else statement to '' from 0. If you still get an error, try the following 

 

COUNT(DISTINCT CASE when DAYOFYEAR(`Date`) < DAYOFYEAR(CURRENT_DATE()) then `Customer Number` else '' end)
