Can I push Input data from a custom app into a dataset?

I'd like to create a custom application that contains input fields that users can type in data and save it. There is lots of documentation about getting the data from your dataset to your app, but what about input data from your app to the dataset?Can you just run a regular http.post request? Is there a domo.post feature?  Are there any documentation or examples available?
