Idea:
I’d love to see a feature in Domo that allows us to rename dataset columns once, and have those changes automatically reflected everywhere that column is referenced (cards, drill paths, ETLs, beast modes, etc.).
Problem Today:
When we want to rename a column (for example, changing “Parent Account” to “Parent Customer”), we have to update every single reference across cards, filters, beast modes, drill paths, ETLs, and report filters. This is extremely time-consuming and risks breaking existing reports. Additionally, many datasets have duplicate or near-duplicate fields (e.g., “Parent Account,” “Parent Client,” “Parent Customer”) that would ideally be consolidated into one consistent name. Without a global rename, cleaning this up creates disruption.
Why It Matters:
- Saves significant time and manual rework.
- Reduces risk of broken cards, drill paths, and ETLs.
- Encourages standardization of naming conventions across the org.
- Makes it easier for users to navigate and understand datasets.
Proposed Solution:
A “global column rename” or “replace all references” feature:
- Admins can rename a field once at the dataset level.
- All dependent cards, filters, beast modes, drill paths, ETLs, and report filters automatically update with the new name.
- Optionally, Domo could provide a preview/impact analysis showing which items will be updated.
This would provide massive efficiency gains and improve data governance for all Domo users.
